Specific

Check out these links for specific reporting information for complaints involving:

General

In general, you can file a complaint about internet-related frauds, scams, and suspicious activity with the following organizations:

The Federal Trade Commission – The Federal Trade Commission is the nation’s consumer protection agency and collects complaints about fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices. If you think you may be a victim of fraud, file a complaint with the FTC.

spam@uce.gov – If you receive an email that you think may be a scam, forward it to the FTC and it will be stored in a database that law enforcement agencies use to generate legal cases.

Your State Attorney General – In addition to the FTC, you can also file a complaint with your state Attorney General’s office if you think you may be a victim of fraud. Your state Attorney General’s office handles a wide range of complaints related to consumer protection.

The internet Crime Complaint Center – The IC3 is a partnership between the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, whose mission is to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop, and refer criminal complaints related to cyber crime.

reportphishing@antiphishing.org – In addition to forwarding spam to spam@uce.gov, you can also forward spam to reportphishing@antiphishing.org. eRumor True – You can send complaint to FTC

An Address at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to Which You Can Send Spam-Truth!

bullet Summary of the eRumor
A simple forwarded email that says you can send complaints about Spam directly to an email address at the Federal Trade Commission

bullet The Truth
The eRumor is apparently true.

There is an official FTC “Consumer Complaint Form” on the FTC website that can be used to report gripes about companies or organizations.
The form asks for details about you and the outfit you are complaining about but also says, “If you have a specific complaint about unsolicited commercial e-mail (spam), use the form below. You can forward spam directly to the Commission at UCE@FTC.GOV without using the complaint form.”

Note: 3/6/2011 – it appears the email address has changed from UCE@FTC.GOV to spam@uce.gov – If you receive an email that you think may be a scam, forward it to the FTC and it will be stored in a database that law enforcement agencies use to generate legal cases.

A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:

You can forward spam complaints directly to the Federal Trade Commission at UCE@FTC.GOV without using the complaint form.

ID Scanner Email Policy

The latest generation of ID Scanner or ID Checker used in bars, night clubs and pubs now offer email capture.  The business owners are asking for this contact information to inform clients about upcoming events and offer incentives to bring them back.  While most owners have signs stating they will not sell, lease or rent this personal data, it is not universally understood by consumers that they need to see this promise before providing their email address.  So before you provide your email address to a bouncer with an ID Scanner, make sure you see a sign stating their data use policy.
